Jesus Christ - Our Mighty God
Isaiah 9:6 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This prophecy of Isaiah was made over 700 years before Jesus was born, probably during the Syro-Ephraimitic war of 732 BC, if it was the same year as Chapter 7. Note that the description is of a male child, but his titles are those of deity.
Wonderful Counsellor brings to mind the Temple guards who refused to arrest him saying ' Never a man spoke like this'. The Hebrew word for wonderful is used for God when he appears as the Angel of the Lord (eg. Judges).
Mighty God is clearly a title of deity and is used in the next chapter as well.
Everlasting Father is literally, Father of eternity, reminding us that Christ has no beginning or ending. He will never cease to be our source of eternal life and joy.
Prince of Peace tells us that he gives us peace with God and the forgiveness of our sins through his substitutionary death on the cross and resurrection. He gives us the peace of God which passes understanding. Peace means wholeness and completeness. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. See the kind of company associated with peace.
All this comes when Jesus is Lord of our lives!
